The Lessons of Aloha: Stories of the Human Spirit Hawaii1s people have powerful stories to tell, exemplified by the inspirational tales in The Lessons of Aloha--Stories of the Human Spirit. Popular Hawaiian entertainer Brother Noland and award-winning photographer Shuzo Uemoto introduce 40 remarkable islanders--teachers and coaches, artists and entrepreneurs, healers and heroes. They are farmers and fishermen who learn from the land, executives who give back to the community, kupuna (elders) who keep the old ways alive and plain folks who1ve conquered addiction and personal tragedy--drugs, prostitution, physical handicaps, a gunpoint hostage situation. These are the compelling, real-life stories of island people, told in their own words.

David Liittschwager and Susan Middleton have established a reputation as the foremost chroniclers of the endangered natural world, combining rigorous methodology with aesthetic genius. Their work has afforded a vivid presence to rare animals and plants, many of which are threatened with extinction.
This groundbreaking portfolio of photographs encompasses the spectacular array of life-forms endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, including species either new to science or previously thought to be extinct.
Working with internationally renowned field biologists, Liittschwager and Middleton have ventured into remote native habitats and uncovered intact ecosystems where plants and animals still live in healthy relationship to one another. Their inaccessibility has helped protect these habitats from damage, even if it means that few people will ever have the opportunity to experience their richness and value directly.@@Remains of a Rainbow: Rare Plants and... @@

HawaiianBooks Enter the world of the honu, Hawai'i's beloved green sea turtle. Revered by Hawaiians since ancient times, and playing an important role in their culture, these turtles were reduced to dangerously low numbers by commercial fishing before gaining protection as a threatened species under federal law.
Born and raised in Hawai'i, author Patrick Ching has long admired these turtles that "fly through the sea." As a ranger for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ching studied the honu closely, living within the turtles' nesting grounds on the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. This book, written for readers of all ages, includes fascinating information on the natural history of the sea turtle species that occur in Hawaiian waters. It is generously illustrated with excellent photographs and Ching's own illustrations. The author's primary focus is on life history, breeding biology, and conservation of the honu, Hawai'i's most prominent sea turtle.

In ancient Hawaii the kahuna were far more than the priests of a religious order. They were experts, trained in a variety of skills and occupations, the learned and professional men and women of their time. On them rested the responsibility of preserving and advancing knowledge within their specific discipline. They arrived at their positions only after more than two decades of training.
L. R. Mcbride collected information about the kahuna for many years through extensive research in 19th century writings and interviews with Hawaiian people. In this fascinating account he gives an accurate and unsensational account of what the kahuna really meant in the Hawaiian culture of long ago. McBride includes fascinating legends and stories concerning individual kahuna. Illusrated with reproductions of historic prints, photographs and drawings by the author and others, The Kahuna presents a readable introduction to a fasinating aspect of ancient Hawaiian culture.@@

HawaiianBooks How does law transform family, sexuality, and community in the fractured social world characteristic of the colonizing process? The law was a cornerstone of the so-called civilizing process of nineteenth-century colonialism. It was simultaneously a means of transformation and a marker of the seductive idea of civilization. Sally Engle Merry reveals how, in Hawai`i, indigenous Hawaiian law was displaced by a transplanted Anglo-American law as global movements of capitalism, Christianity, and imperialism swept across the islands. The new law brought novel systems of courts, prisons, and conceptions of discipline and dramatically changed the marriage patterns, work lives, and sexual conduct of the indigenous people of Hawai`i.

HawaiianBooks earl Harbor is a beautifully written and suspenseful epic saga of love and war. Rafe McCawley and Danny Walker are two daring young pilots in the U.S. Army Air Corps who have grown up like brothers and first learned to fly in crop-dusting planes. Rafe has fallen in love with Evelyn Stewart, a beautiful and courageous nurse serving in the U.S. Navy. But they are soon separated by war when Rafe volunteers for the Eagle Squadron, a group of Americans fighting alongside the English during the Battle of Britain. With the solemn promise that he will return, Rafe heads off for the deadly skies above the English Channel, while both Evelyn and Danny are transferred to the paradise of Hawaii's Pearl Harbor. Their Eden is shattered, however, when word reaches them in the Pacific that Rafe has been killed in combat. Grief-stricken, they hold fast to each other for support, and ultimately fall in love. HawaiianBooks This is a book about the politics of competing cultures and myths in a colonized nation. Elizabeth Buck considers the transformation of Hawaiian culture focusing on the indigenous population rather than on the colonizers. She describes how Hawaii's established religious, social, political, and economic relationships have changed in the past 200 years as a result of Western imperialism. Her account is particularly timely in light of the current Hawaiian demands for sovereignty 100 years after the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893.
Buck examines the social transformation Hawaii from a complex hierarchical, oral society to an American state dominated by corporate tourism and its myths of paradise. She pays particular attention to the ways contemporary Hawaiians are challenging the use of their traditions as the basis for exoticized entertainment.

HawaiianBooks This volume is the most detailed case study of land tenure in Hawai'i. Focusing on kuleana (homestead land) in Kahana, O'ahu, from 1846 to 1920, the author challenges commonly held views concerning the Great Mahele (Division) of 1846-1855 and its aftermath. There can be no argument that in the fifty years prior to the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, ninety percent of all land in the Islands passed into the control or ownership of non-Hawaiians. This land grab is often thought to have begun with the Great Mahele and to have been quickly accomplished because of Hawaiians' ignorance of Western law and the sharp practices of Haole (white) capitalists. What the Great Mahele did create were separate land titles for two types of land (kuleana and ahupua'a) that were traditionally thought of as indivisible and interconnected, thus undermining an entire social system. With the introduction of land titles and ownership, Hawaiian land could now be bought, sold, mortgaged, and foreclosed. The new concept of land, coupled with a foreign-controlled government indifferent to native land rights and a steady decline in the native population, proved disastrous for Hawaiians. @@Kahana: How the Land Was Lost
