In Pahinui's hands, slack key
guitar is eloquent, original, and virtuosic. Night Moon, his third
release on Dancing Cat Records, is his most polished yet. He offers effortless
chops, peppering each piece--vocal and instrumental alike--with a broad
vocabulary of intricate motives and well-handled dynamics. Singing in a lazy
melancholy tenor-baritone, with an impressive falsetto, his voice is the perfect
juxtaposition for his active, expressive playing. Pahinui has recorded
prolifically since the late '60s when he appeared on several albums with his
father, the late Gabby Pahinui (Hawaii's best known and most influential slack
key guitarist). Pahinui is ecstatically at play on "Hurrah Lani Ha'a Ha'a,"
which sounds distinctly country, and features some of his most deftly crafted
fretwork. Listen to the subtle harmonies of "Hawaiian Cowboy," and the halted
urgency of "Po Mahina," and you'll put this guy up against any fingerstylist

As the 9th of Gabby Pahinui's 10 children, Cyril hails from the first family
of slack key. He's known for his percussive sound, which he creates by
dampening the strings with his right hand, but the jaunty, delicate melodies
and improvisations he places between the beats are just as impressive.
He can stretch out effortlessly from the traditional to the progressive,
sometimes even in the same song, and he's also one of the genre's most
emotive vocalists, particularly in the Hawaiian falsetto style. This solo
album offers a strong mix of traditional and improvised-in-the-studio songs.

Kiho'alu (slack key) guitar
is a durable and easy-to-listen-to music, with a lilting phrasing that is
curiously offset by an edge created by the unusual tunings. Cyril Pahinui comes
from the acknowledged dynasty of Hawaiian slack-key guitarists. His playing is
flawless, his style modern yet still folksy. Bob Brozman is one of America's
leading slide and resonator guitar proponents, and one who has had a love of
Hawaiian music for a long, long time. Brozman has also been a major student of
Hawaiian slack-key guitar, working with many of the great island musicians over
the last decade, bringing the music to new audiences around the world. Together
Pahinui and Brozman have lovingly re-created some classics, emphasizing the
melodies of songs that would have normally been heard in ensembles where the
guitar might be more lost in the overall sound. Here the melodies and harmonies
of the tunes jump right out, whether it's a sweet love song like "Hula O Makee"

Description
Bla Pahinui comes from an
illustrious Hawaiian musical family. His father is Gabby Pahinui, the father of
modern slack key, and his brothers, Cyril, Martin and Philip, have also made
their mark. Of all the Pahinuis, Bla has been the most adventurous in terms of
styles.
The exquisitely titled "Guava Soul" is the perfect description of his
approach to music: a touch of the tropics, a touch of the blues, full-bodied and
deep -- this is Bla having fun and at his best. His gentle voice, his strong
instrumental accompaniment and his dynamic sense when choosing material which is
perfect for him: these elements come together to create a warm album that
reaches back to the past while leaning forward.
To start with his voice, he falls into a select group of singers which
includes Aaron Neville, Sam Cook, Otis Redding -- so soulful, so moving. He is
perhaps not as polished as some, but his emotional voice is totally captivating.
As a guitarist, he is a left-hander playing a right-handed instrument upside
down. For the most part, his guitar work is hidden behind the backup band, but
when it peeks through, it is like a ray of sunshine.
Bla Pahinui, while not a prolific recording artist, is one who enjoys his
music and chooses it well. Whether reaching into his traditional past or into
his affinity with soul music, he gives everything he has. Instrumentally, Guava
Soul presents a tight, focused group of talented musicians. The result is a
recording which connects. |
