Hawaiian slack key Guitar　(ki ho'alu) ハワイアン・スラック・キー・ギター なんともハワイ嵐意、のんびりとした緩慢な音色を特徴としているのがハワイアン・ミュージックに欠かせないスラック・キー・ギターだ。そのルーツは１８３０年ごろ、ハワイの牧畜業を手助けするため、メキシコから呼ばれたカウボーイたちバケーロスが持ち込んだギターにあった。 ギター自体は普通のものだが、その調弦法に特徴がある。「スラックSlack」とは「ゆるい」という意味があり、弦を緩めて楽な感じで引けるのが持ち味。なかでもタロ・パッチと言って太い弦から順にＤＧＤＧＢＤの音になるように合わせる方法が基本となっている。こうすると普通に調弦したときと比べ，１，５，６弦の音が下がり、弦を抑えずにストロークした時、そのまま心地よい和音になる。いわゆるオープン・チューニングである。チューニングの種類は少なく見ても３０種を超え、各々が独自に開発し、個性的な音を生み出している。 Hawaiian slack key (ki ho'alu) Master's Bradda Smitty Barney Isaacs & George Kuo B.B. It became a recognizable style around the turn of the century. The term refers to the practice of slacking some strings from standard tunings to create open tunings; the thumb provides the bass line while the other fingers play melody and improvise. It might thus remind some listeners of the fingerpicking of a country master like Doc Watson, but the style has a wind-blown, wide-open quality all its own. Traditionally an accompanying instrument in a group setting, slack key has recently moved out front, and this all-instrumentals CD shows why. The result is a truly original and refreshingly low-key take on Christmas music. Keola Beamer's version of "Away in a Manger" is filled with jazzy bass touches; Led Kaapana and Bob Brozman's "Jingle Bells" is a hard-driving and virtuosic showpiece, with Brozman seemingly working the entire fretboard; and Bla Pahanui's arrangement of "O Come All Ye Faithful" is gorgeous and creative. Ozzie Kotani's "First Noel" is understated but a touch too sentimental and the three vocal tracks--by Dennis Kamakahi, Leonard Kwan, and Joanie & Ruth Komatsu--seem out of place amid all these lush guitar textures.
