Hawaii's Queen Lili'uokalani was a ruler who was also a prodigious composer,
penning over 150 songs that attempted to capture the essence of her kingdom
during her lifetime. So it's only apt that this album should interpret
some of that work instrumentally by master player Ozzie Kotani through
the national slack key guitar style. Even without words, the pieces turn
out to be rich and full, whether the bell-like tones of "Moanalua"
or the beauty of "Aloha 'Oe", a song forever associated with
Hawaii and here given an interesting treatment by Kotani, who slows the
pace to that of a languid Pacific sunset. Lili'uokalani obviously loved
melody and in Kotani she has a sympathetic champion who plays her work
with thought and love. George Winston's crystalline production adds wonderful
depth and the entire album is a refreshing, even spiritual experience.

Solo, using a nylon-string guitar that distinguishes his sound
from other slack-key guitarists, Kotani sets up mesmerizing bass drones over
which he plays improvisations and bright melodies that seem to echo themselves;
his chord progressions are often unique to slack key, and because he never
sings, he often phrases the guitar like he would vocal lines. His four-finger
picking method has led some to conclude he's classically trained, which he
isn't. He can also sound too precious, or New Agey, for some, but his peers

| Hawaiian slack-key guitar began evolving in the 1830s, when Spanish and
Mexican cowboys brought guitars to the cattle ranches of the Big Island.
It became a recognizable style around the turn of the century. The term
refers to the practice of slacking some strings from standard tunings to
create open tunings; the thumb provides the bass line while the other fingers
play melody and improvise. It might thus remind some listeners of the fingerpicking
of a country master like Doc Watson, but the style has a wind-blown, wide-open
quality all its own. Traditionally an accompanying instrument in a group
setting, slack key has recently moved out front, and this all-instrumentals
CD shows why. From the light touch of Moses Kahumoku or Leonard Kwan to
the bluesiness of George Keo or Ray Kane to the pop feel of Keola Beamer,
