On Hawaiian Love Songs, George Kahumoku skillfully manages the delicate
balancing act of stretching the sonic boundaries of slack-key guitar technique
while keeping the music firmly rooted in tradition. On tracks like "The
Queen's Prayer," which features a bass-string glissando inspired by
the Chantays' surf-guitar classic "Pipeline," Kahumoku's 12-string
guitar playing recalls the intricate picking of a young Leo Kottke. On
gentler tracks like "Nu'oli" and "Nakalele" he revels
in the gorgeous melodies that Hawaiian musicians seem to produce in endless
streams. Kahumoku is joined by vocalist Diana Aki for a duet on the tragic
love song "Keiki Mahine." Other guest artists include slide-guitar
master Bob Brozman and harmonica player Norton Buffalo, who adds a soulful
blues wail to "Lei Pikake." Hawaiian Love Songs is a beautiful
blend of contemporary slack-key guitar playing by a musician who respects
the past, but doesn't feel compelled to repeat it. --Michael Simmons |

Description
It's a peaceful, quiet Sunday
morning on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Bright sunlight reflects off a calm sea, a
brief, warm shower forms a rainbow on the slopes of Mauna Loa. A small, colorful
wooden church is shaded by mango and palm trees in a tiny coastal fishing
village. The soft island air, redolent with the gentle scent of plumeria and the
richer fragrances of passion fruit, is stirred by sweet music from the church.
The songs are distinctly Hawaiian, yet somehow familiar. These are the hymns of
Hawai'i, the songs that George Kahumoku, Jr. sang as a child growing up on the
Big Island. They are the hymns that have helped to hold his family together over
several generations.
With this recording, George realizes a dream he has had for many years. He
has long wanted to preserve this music, which has been an important part of his
spiritual life. When Daniel Ho proposed that they collaborate on a recording of
Hawaiian hymns, George immediately agreed. These are the hymns, the heni, that
George learned as a young boy seated with his parents, grandparents, aunties,
uncles and their children around the kitchen table.
For George, the little and sometimes not so little tragedies of life are just
ways of bringing one closer to God. "George Kahumoku has gotten a little off
track, so let's give him a bout of cancer right at this point in his life," is
the way he puts it. Especially at these times, not just the words, but also the
melodies and rhythms of this wonderful music have brought him comfort and peace.
He hopes that this recording will do the same for others. |

A Hawaiian Life |
Book
Description
George Kahumoku, Jr., the
Hawaiian slack key guitar player, is a superb story teller. He has always wanted
to write some of these stories down, and finally has. If you've had the
opportunity to see George in concert, you may have heard some of them, or parts
of them. They are highly personal, and distinctly Hawaiian. George was raised
mostly by grandparents, and in some respects he is like a Hawaiian of a
generation or two earlier. But he is also a thoroughly modern fellow who's
traveled the world, played music for the Queen of England, and gotten a mainland
college degree. He has even been known to carry around a notebook computer from
time to time. These are tales of poverty and tough times that illustrate the
difficulties of growing up Hawaiian in a modern western setting. But more than
anything, these stories will make you laugh. This is principally because of
George's sense of humor and his ability to overcome life's obstacles with an
upbeat attitude and good grace and above all, a very traditional spirit of
Aloha. |

This second album in Dancing Cat
Records' Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters Series produced by George Winston
follows its successful Hawaiian Slack Key
Guitar Masters. Again the masters of the genre are featured in several
well-known tunes such as Lili'uokalani's "Aloha 'Oe" (played here by George
Kahumoku) and "'Ulili E" (Dennis and David Kamakahi), as well as modern
originals and two tracks that had not been available on CD before: "Ulu Niu
Ke'eke'e" (George Kahumoku and Kekuhi Kanahele) and "Slack Key Serenade"
(Leonard Kwan and Ozzie Kotani). The liner notes provide complete information on
each song's original album.
A balance of instrumental and vocal tracks, the compilation is a terrific
starting point for exploring the artistic and stylistic diversity in modern
slack key. Instruments on this album include everything from traditional
mouth bow, 'ukulele, and percussion stones to 12-string slack key and modern
acoustic guitars. Elder statesman Ray Kane lullabies us with his simple
instrumental "Popoki Slack Key" (popoki means "little cat");
renowned improviser Cyril Pahinui and Sol Hoopii-influenced Bob Brozman
combine 12-string slack key and acoustic steel guitar interpreting "Hilo
E" and "Lili'u E" in a style evocative of the 1920s. Showing
off how slack key works solo, in duets, or with mixed accompaniment, this
is one of the most beautiful slack key compilations out there. --Erik Macki |

From

Hawaiian Slack Key Christmas is genre melding of the best sort: incredible
guitar playing in the Hawaiian tradition dominates the disc, but the material
is mostly familiar holiday carols. The result is a truly original and refreshingly
low-key take on Christmas music. Keola Beamer's version of "Away in
a Manger" is filled with jazzy bass touches; Led Kaapana and Bob Brozman's
"Jingle Bells" is a hard-driving and virtuosic showpiece, with
Brozman seemingly working the entire fretboard; and Bla Pahanui's arrangement
of "O Come All Ye Faithful" is gorgeous and creative. Ozzie Kotani's
"First Noel" is understated but a touch too sentimental and the
three vocal tracks--by Dennis Kamakahi, Leonard Kwan, and Joanie &
Ruth Komatsu--seem out of place amid all these lush guitar textures. That
said, this is still a great album and a wonderful alternative for guitar
lovers who've worn out their copies of John Fahey's legendary Christmas
album. --Jason Verlinde |
